Formed in 1904 by the Catawba Power Company (now Duke Energy), this 325 mile shoreline man-made lake has a surface area of 13,400 acres and a max depth of 82′. The lake spans two states and three counties (York SC, Gaston NC, and Mecklenburg NC). Lake Wylie is the oldest of 11 reservoir lakes that make up the Catawba River Basin. The river basin is a critical natural resource to the area as a source of hydro-electric power as well as the drinking water source for Charlotte and surrounding areas.
If you are interested in learning more about the river basin and how to get involved, please visit the Catawba Riverkeeper’s website.
